1969 – served with 9 RAR in South Vietnam as Platoon Commander and was awarded the Military Cross.
1983 – commanded 1 RAR
1985 – commanded 6th Brigade
1997 – Commandant RMC, Duntroon
1999 – commaned 1st Division and led International Forces (INTERFET) in peacekeeping operations in East Timor
2000 – Companion of Military Division Order of Australia AC
2000 – Chief of Army (Lieutenant General)
2001 – named Australian of the Year
2002 – Chief of Defence Force (General)
2005 – retired from Defence Force
2006 – headed Task Force to assist with reconstruction of Innisfail, following the devastation from cyclone Larry
